The Abkhaz State University turned 30. Today an anniversary evening party was held in the ASU assembly hall. The President Sergey Bagapsh, Prime Minister Alexander Ankvab, Vice Speaker Vyacheslav Tsugba, the capital’s mayor Alias Labakhua, the Russia’s Ambassador to Abkhazia Semyon Grigoriev, members of the Government came to congratulate the university.
The guests were welcomed by the ASU rector, academician Aleko Gvaramia. He told about the history of the education establishment, about the difficulties which accompanied the opening of the first Abkhaz University. Gvaramia remembered by name all those who had contributed considerably to the ASU opening and formation - Boris Adleiba, Valerin Kobakhia, Bagrat Shinkuba, Georgy Dzidzaria, Jury Voronov, etc.
“The ASU creation has become the most important event in the development of higher professional education and scientific school of Abkhazia. Being a full member of the Russian University Association, the high school develops successfully international activity”, the President Sergey Bagapsh’s congratulatory address reads in part. “Having educated many generation of well-qualified specialists, the ASU can be proud of the lecturers and graduates by right. Many of them, unfortunately, died for freedom and independence. Let them rest in peace!”
94 University’s student and lecturers gave up their lives for freedom of Apsny.
The President stressed that the ASU is the cradle of learning and ednlightment, the leader of knowledge and education. He expressed confidence that henceforth the ASU will cope with this responsible mission. Bagapsh wished the University further prosperity and new achievements. The President advised the students to value the received knowledge, to put it into practice skilfully for the good of the society and the state.
Vyacheslav Tsugba, Pavel Adzynba, Harry Kupalba, Alias Labakhua, Temur Gogua congratulated the University on the anniversary.
“I’ve been working in the Abkhaz State University (A. M. Gorki’s Sukhum State Pedagogical Institute till1979) since the fifties. All this time I’ve been surrounded by young people. Apparently, all this as well as love to science and a call of duty keep in me the will and desire to work for the good of our people and republic”, an ASU professor Margarita Ladaria said. She added that the ÀÃÓ lecturers try to make every student become a true citizen of the republic.
“I will not enumerate all the students, remarkable personalities who have graduated from our higher education establishment and who succeeded in fulfilling themselves as citizens. But I cannot but name such bright representatives of our nation as the historian Stanislav Lakoba, the first President Vladislav Ardzinba”, Ladaria said.
The anniversary ended with a concert.
In August, 2006 the President Sergey Bagapsh signed the decree about giving the Abkhaz State University the status of independent self-administrated organization of higher professional education. This decision was taken with a view to “create favorable conditions for the Abkhaz State University to respond to the challenges issued to it in preparing well-qualified specialists, development of science and culture in the most efficient way as well as to raise its role in the system of education as a higher professional education organization”.
