The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia Sergey Shamba met with the “Norwegian Refugees Council” (NRC) international humanitarian organization representatives Mr. Peter Kostogryz who was appointed as new organization’s regional director for the Caucasus, as well as the regional NRC manager madam Ana Povrjenic. The meeting was held within the framework of Peter Kostogryz’s familiarization visit to Abkhazia.
Madam Povrjenic told the Minister about the organization’s projects planned for 2010. So, with financial assistance from the UNHCR the NCR continues with the project of building houses for beneficiants from the Tkuarchal, Ochamchira and Gal districts. This project provides for building of new houses as well as repair of the houses where beneficiants already live. 85 houses are to be repaired in 2010.
The organization also plans the “small hothouse farms” project aimed at rendering assistance to beneficiants within the framework of the house repair project. The carpenter's workshop in the city of Gal working with the NRC assistance is to be attracted for acquiring necessary construction materials.
With a view of giving jobs to the local young people NRC intends to open a school to the carpenter's workshop to train young people in professions with the best job opportunities in the republic at present. The project will involve Abkhaz State University lecturers and experts.
NRC also plans to repair three comprehensive schools with preliminary endorsement by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Abkhazia. In 2009 NRC repaired three secondary schools in the villages of Bagriap, Baslakhu and Gup, and repaired partially #10 school in the city of Sukhum.
NRC continues to consult local population on legal matters in the city of Gal. Basically citizens inquire about the documents package for receiving the national document proving identity.
The Norwegian Refugees Council representatives thanked for organizing the meeting, stressing that the Abkhazia’s authorities are always ready for a dialogue with humanitarian organizations. |
