KNUT VOLLEBAEK: I’M ENGAGED IN CONFLICT RESOLUTION AND CROSS-CULTURAL DISSENTION SETTLEMENT

“Today we have held a number of productive, useful meetings with the country leadership. I can tell that we have come to understanding and the work we do, will be fruitful”, the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Knut Vollebaek told journalists after the meeting with the President Sergey Bagapsh.

The diplomat was extremely brief with the journalists. He only said that the following day, February 4, he would visit the Gal district and would meet with the Georgian community representatives, and on February 5 - with the Armenian community representatives in Gagra.

He expressed hope that his experience could be useful for strengthening of mutual understanding between different ethnic groups of Abkhazia.

Answering the question what country he had arrived in, the High Commissioner of OSCE not recognizing independence of Abkhazia, said: “I have a neutral status. I work both in Abkhazia, and Georgia, as well as in all other countries which the OSCE mandate is applied to. I’m engaged in conflict resolution and cross-cultural dissention settlement”.
