General Zviryk called prevention of trespassing the border, smuggling and armed gangs entering in the Republic of Abkhazia among the Border guard department’s main tasks.

“It took the Border guard department’s officers much effort to enter and deploy units of the Border guard department. The necessity to do a lot of work settling down on a new location in tent camps and to fulfill the task of protecting the Abkhaz-Georgian border, mobilized each and every border guard’s efforts”, the Lieutenant-General said. According to him, thanks to teamwork of the Border guard department and the leadership of the Republic of Abkhazia two thirds of Border guard units had already moved to proper buildings by the end of fall 2009.

All Border guard units were manned and started fulfilling operations tasks in a short space of time. “Many-sided tasks the Russian border guards in the Republic of Abkhazia fulfill, can only be compared to many-sided functions of the Border guard service of FSB of Russia as a whole”, he said.
